Red Riding

Is it just me, or was this series a bit shit. I wasn't convinced the books (which were superb, in my opinion) would be adaptable for TV. I think I was right.

St James Centre - Lumix LX3

So I finally succumbed and stumped up for the Lumix LX-3. First impressions are that it's absolutely amazing. This shot (click to see it bigger) is as it came out of the camera, not Photoshop whatsoever.

It's really nice that Panasonic look like they've actually asked photographers what they want from a high end compact camera when they were upgrading from the LX-2. I always really liked the LX-2, but let's face it was shit at the long end of the zoom and even shitter in low light situations.

The LX-3 is a different story, they've stuck with the 10.1MP format, which is nice, who needs 14/15MP in a compact camera? It's always seemed completely and utterly pointless to me and looking at the results from the Canon G10, the noise reduction required to service that level of MP renders a lot of the images unusable.

The zoom range is interesting too, Panasonic have limited the zoom to something like 24-60mm which makes me think that this is designed for serious photographers who already have their DSLR and range of lenses and are looking for a decent walkabout compact for everyday use. That's certainly what I was looking for, something small enough to comforatbaly pocket but still with the quality to post to a blog or another website.

The results so far are nothing short of staggering.

Plus it opens up a whole new world of camera geekery http://www.lx3-photography.com/search/label/LX3%20ACCESSORIES not of course, that I needed another one. I'm going to enjoy this though.

Grünnerløkka Street Scene

Just back from a weekend in Oslo. Courtesy of the new Norwegian Airlines direct flight from Edinburgh, which I'd thoroughly recommend. A budget-ish airline, but not hassle whatsoever and it actually flyies to Oslo Gardermoen (20 mins from city) rather than Torp (like Ryanair) which is 2 hours away!

A decent, interesting city, similar size to Edinburgh and nice to walk around. Loads of snow while we were there.

Took this shot at a cracking wee bar called Bar Boca in the Grunnerlokka district. As with most cities, the upcoming, former working class areas were by far the most interesting.

Average beerage was a rather steep £5.50. Ouch.

Poladroid

I found a great new toy, Poladroid. A little application you can download for free here

You can drag and drop existing digital pictures into the application to have them exposed like vintage Polaroid SX-70 film. It's really nice, especially considering Polaroid have stopped making film now.

Pictures, from top are, a weird Evangelical church on Victoria Rd in Glasgow, near where I used to live. A disturbingly sinister, wee rabbit that was outside a shop on Brick Lane, London and the St James Centre car park.

Do not be afraid

Saw this graf on Leith Walk, seemed fairly relevant at the moment with the economy in tatters.

New Year

Dug out my 17-40mm lens for some wide angle New Year wanderings. These two images are crops of the 'Winter Wonderland' thing they seem to to do every year now in Princes St Gardens.

ECA Degree Show 2008

I popped into the Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show after work. Nothing much appealed to me to be honest.

Apart from one of the photography student's portraits of Japanese construction workers.

The stuff in the photowas quite nice too, but not a great deal to get excited about, which was a shame.

Tunes

Listening to vinyl, playing with 50mm lens. It was raining again. Nice afternoon though.

Rainy

Really chuffed with the way this image turned out. I was just messing about with my camera, taking pictures from the top of the bus as it headed down Princes St.

Like the figure in the background with the umbrella, not really planned, but a nice accident.

The Blues

Just some random shots I took during a lunchtime photo-wander out of the office.

It's the new development at the Union Canal in Edinburgh. Soul-less shitty architecture with the usual plasticky, vibe-free bars for dickheads.

I won't be going back. The blue on this wall was quite nice though. : )
